Landscape Photography

"Walk in Beauty, Listen from the Heart, Touch the Spirit, and Fly."

I am a landscape photographer of both grand scenic vistas as well as small close-up “intimate landscapes”. While not one to shy away from a “pretty picture”, I prefer to create images that capture the feeling or essence of a scene or communicate a more complex story.

I began “taking pictures” as a kid, usually on solo explorations and hikes. I was in awe of the natural world, especially wilderness, but was frustrated that my pictures usually failed to fully capture what I felt and thought I saw. Many years later I began to learn what it takes to create a meaningful and memorable photograph that can transport the viewer to a time, place, and state of being that can be transformative.

Photography is how I explore and get to know who I am in this world and to share that with others. It is how I encourage others to slow down, to get in touch with the natural world, to look beyond or outside of what is obvious, to listen deeper to what isn’t being heard, and to open hearts and minds to “what we don’t know we don’t know.”

Salt Fired Ceramics

"Salt firing is a labor intensive and unpredictable endeavor. A successful kiln still induces one with a kids joy of unwrapping presents; driving me back into the studio to start the whole crazy process all over again."

As a ceramic artist, I find simple satisfaction daily engaging in the processes and cycle of forming, glazing and firing. It’s my hope that my work on occasion becomes an oasis in the user’s daily activities; providing comfort and/or service. My focus on jewelry design and textiles began in 1972 when I took jewelry and weaving classes as a teenager. I have created jewelry, woven and knit for over 50 years because it feeds my soul and keeps me whole.

For 12 years, I made my living designing and weaving garments for women and children. In 1987, I stepped into the world of nonprofit management as the Executive Director of Allied Arts of Whatcom County. For eight years I served on the Washington State Arts Commission. I continue to bring the arts to all I do. Examples of this is the artwork on the outside of the building at 408 Broadway. This $23.3 million project to build permanent housing for homeless families includes ceramic tile mosaics by Claudia Riedener, a large mural by Gerald Pena and metal fencing by Jennifer Wedderman.

Printmaker, Papermaker

“Mark-making is a necessary component to my work and to my life. It becomes the conversations, the emotions, and the words that are not meant to be heard.”

I make art out of the need to react, to express, and to reflect on the world around me, whether it be politics, social justice issues, community interactions, and/or the natural environment that surrounds me. As I move through the day, these “environments” intersect and affect how I think and feel. I use contemporary printmaking and papermaking techniques to create most of my artwork. The mark making that is seen throughout my work has become the conversations, the emotions, and the words that are not meant to be heard.

I am a retired art teacher, now dedicating my time to creating contemporary prints and paper pulp paintings, while exhibiting and selling my artwork. I have a home printmaking studio. I am active in the Gig Harbor art community, where I have an a member of Ebb Tide Gallery, President of the Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour, a board member of the Peninsula Art League, and a coordinator for the Gig Harbor ArtWalk. My paper pulp paintings are created at Hook Pottery Paper in La Porte, Indiana, where I visit annually.

Acrylic Painting

"Art has been an important part of my life, whether I’mcreating or teaching art. I can work on my art all the time."

My MFA in Fine Arts Education emphasized the study of at-risk teenagers and art as therapy. After 14 years of teaching art, I went back to the northwest and taught in the Peninsula School District for 15 years and now I am retired.

I have always been inspired by Vincent Van Gogh and his impressionistic style. This is where my interest in art as therapy developed because I completely believe that Vincent’s painting was his therapy to deal with life. Another huge influence on my art is Georgia O’Keefe and the way she focused in on objects to show another way to look at objects and their beauty.

I love to paint stories through a series of works. Recently my last two series have come from books I have read that includes history. I have a series of 10 acrylic paintings of Underground Railroad Quilts. I love the story about how the Williams family used quilts to guide them to freedom.

Currently I am working on a series of acrylic flower paintings after reading about each flower meaning in a book titled The Language of Flowers. I participated in the 2018 Winterfest and this is where I met artists who encouraged me to participate in the GH Open Studio Tour.

Abstract Painting

I am an abstract painter. I use acrylic paint, house paint, India ink, oil crayons and other media in my process. Because these materials are all quick-drying, it allows me to make quick decisions as I work, keeping my work open and genuine.

It is necessary that each painting has a life of its own and has its own voice. The paintings often change, but the core meaning of each piece remains constant: the connection of what we know to what we feel.

In my most recent work, the bold colors ‘sit’ on the layers beneath and create a visual conversation between the viewer and the painting which continues after the first interaction.

For as long as I can remember I’ve examined the world through color. A tree trunk is never simply just brown or gray, it’s built of a complex network of exciting colors, values and light. My artistic process is highly physical and involved throughout. I take pleasure in the fact that the complexity of my craft becomes concealed within the relative implicity of a final form. It is a reminder to look closely at what I perceive as simplistic and to always remain curious.

Andrew ‘Van’ DeGoede grew up on the Puget Sound surrounded by the natural beauty of towering mountains and opulent forests. It's no surprise that such beauty would prompt a desire to not only capture it, but to understand, and only then, to truly enjoy it.

DeGoede traveled to California to receive his Bachelor's Degree in Studio Arts with a concentration in Art History. He dedicated the final years of his undergraduate years to Alla Prima Painting under Tony Pro. Returning to Seattle to attend Juliette Aristides' Classical Atelier, Andrew gained a solid foundation in Academic Drawing and Traditional Oil Painting techniques. Working as the atelier assistant, Andrew found an unrealized ability and passion for instructing.

To complete his Master of Fine Art, Andrew returned to Gig Harbor, and now works out of a studio back on the water that originally inspired him. His work has evolved into what can be described as impressionistic realism, with an aim at capturing and revealing the beauty that lies hidden all around us.

Painting with the use of a lot of water somehow works for me and has become part of my emotive, painterly style I call Impressionistic Realism.

Although I am capable of doing photo-real work, I prefer creating works that lean towards a looser rendering of the real and leave a little to the viewer's imagination. Lots of layering is used to capture the complexity and create depth. A bit of mystery on how it was done is always fun.

Using drips, blooms and bright colors fits my adventurous personality. It's the chase of corralling the watercolors wildness that keeps me using this media, but at the same time allowing it to remain wild. Always challenging.

Finishing works with pastels and/or India Ink incorporates my drawing skills and seems to complete certain pieces of art.

Fiber Wearables

“I design finely crafted garments that celebrate artisan fashion. The collections are small editions or one-of-a-kind garments using hand-dyed silk, cotton and wool fabrics produced in my studio.”

Elizabeth Garver is an independent clothing designer committed to producing finely crafted garments with distinctive, elegant styling. Her garments are made from a variety of textured silk fabrics that are hand-dyed and accented with appliquéd surfaces. The current collection includes jackets, blouses, tunics and scarves. She also produces a small line of unique wool and denim coats.

Elizabeth began producing clothes full-time after graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Textiles from the Rochester Institute of Technology. For over 30 years she has regularly exhibited and sold her work at the American Craft Council shows in addition to participating in a number of other craft shows throughout the eastern United States. Her work is featured in Fibre Arts Design books I & II and she has given workshops and talks about her surface design techniques.

Acrylic Painting

I am a mixed-media artist with a focus on acrylic painting. Clay Sculpture

“Creating is much like personal growth, you must be willing to learn and take chances.”

I use the female form and the idea of emergence when creating a piece. My style incorporates flowing lines, negative space, and a contrast of colors and materials. Working from a solid block, I move clay using a grab and stick method to get the basic form which can be exhausting. However, it is so rewarding when a face or form organically emerges. If I want to incorporate glass during the final glazing, I plan for that in my construction. Once most details are done, I hallow out the piece so it can dry for several weeks before being finished.

Outdoor Sculpture

For over three decades, I have been creating unique sculptures that capture attention and engage the imagination through simple design and kinetic movement. My sculptures interpret nature’s genius, a balance of complex function and simplistic beauty.

Fiber Artist

“I find great joy and peace in creating art while giving shelter to abused and neglected animals.”

I have been a lifelong knitter and always wanted to spin. I decided to concentrate on hand-worked, undyed fiber. Nuno felting intrigued me and I developed that technique while practicing my spinning.

My Nuno felted scarves, hats and shawls are all undyed, hand crafted, unique pieces created from my own alpaca fiber with added silk for durability and beauty.

I have been an avid knitter since the age of 5 when my great aunt, grandmother and mother began teaching me in my native Scotland. I started spinning and felting in the Pacific NW where I settled some 21 years ago after living and working in several places worldwide, including Switzerland and Australia. Adopting 3 alpacas and expanding my herd through breeding has allowed me access to prime fiber in a variety of natural colors.

About 15 years ago I started taking workshops from Cheryl Samuel in Ravenstail weaving and fell in love with that art form.

At the present time I live on my acreage in Vaughn with 7 alpacas (3 of them the original rescues) and 2 Rottweiler-cross dogs (both rescues). In the near future I hope to, once again, adopt some goats to round out my menagerie.

Oil Painting, Silk Scarves and Necklaces

Ann is an oil painter, working with invisible beneficial spirit energy. Ann’s paintings have been the focus of a One Woman Show at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, and her work has been shown at the Corcoran Museum of Art in Washington.D.C.

Her tropical prints have been sold on the Princess Cruise Line, and many of her original paintings have been purchased by numerous hotels throughout Florida, Mexico and California.

Ann has also created a body of work which is figurative; focusing heavily on city buildings at night, and the romantic excitement of the lights and colorful reflections on rainy streets.

In the last 40 years Ann has sculpted in steel, worked a little with wood, and has hand painted acres of virgin silk (which, she remarked is addictive). But at the heart of it all, she is an abstract figurative oil painter who is driven by Music, Rhythm and Color.

“My abstract paintings attempt to navigate the space between serenity and instability.”

My paintings and collages are inspired by interactions of the built and natural environment. Photographs and drawings of landscapes ravaged by natural and man made disasters, architectural skeletal structures including abandoned and decaying industrial sites and partially completed bridges form the base of my compositions. These images are juxtaposed with abstract images of roots, trees, and rocks.

Harmonizing the tension between serenity and instability I allude to a rupture or disruption in the environment. My work attempts to challenge the traditional way we look at landscape painting as something pristine and untouched.

As a local artist who grew up in northwest Washington, I graduated from Seattle University and taught art locally, nationally and in Europe. I belong to several art organizations and exhibit in Washington and Oregon galleries. 

I paint mainly in oils and pastels but occasionally acrylics. I also do studio paintings, plein air and draw and paint from live models.

My studio is in the Artondale area of Gig Harbor, where I teach and have open studio groups and host workshops.

I am a compulsively creative person by nature and a paper cutter by trade. Inspired by things I see and experience in my daily life, I take photographs, sketch and then cut images out of a single piece of paper with an x-acto knife.

Spending the majority of my life in Pennsylvania farm country, small town Montana, and the watery, mountainous Pacific Northwest, nature has always been key to my happiness and creativity. Nature’s complexity, beauty, and ability to elicit emotion inform and inspire me every day and my affinity for all living things manifests in every piece of art I create.
